Dishonored and the Bible

UPDATE: GameStop’s pre-order incentive for this game is a pack of TAROT Cards. Coincidence?

In Isaiah 5:20 it says:

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Let’s look at a few ways this series is calling what is evil-according to the Bible-good:

Corvo Attano:

Corvo picture from Dishonored Wiki

Corvo Attano is the main character of Dishonored. Corvo translated in Portuguese actually means raven. Turn to Genesis 8:7:

And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.

Now, let’s see who else goes “to and fro” through the earth according to the Bible:

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” (1 Peter 5:8)

And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” (Job 1:7)

So here we see the hero representing the devil.

The Heart:

The Heart from Dishonored Wiki

There is a mystical item in the game called The Heart. It whispers secrets of the game world into Corvo’s mind. It beats faster when facing runes (items that when collected upgrade Corvo’s powers), helping him locate these objects. In general, it’s seen as a useful and “good” tool.

Let’s see what the Bible says about the heart:

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.“(Genesis 8:21)

For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.“(Acts 28:27)

The Outsider:

The Outsider from Dishonored Wiki

The Outsider is a being described as “part devil, part angel, and entirely ambiguous.” He is also the source of all magical power in the game world, and is worshiped by some of the population. He burned his mark into Corvo’s hand, giving him supernatural powers.

The quote describing him as “part devil, part angel, and entirely ambiguous.” identifies him as Lucifer. Lucifer was once an angel, but is now fallen and known as Satan or the Devil:

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” (Isaiah 14:12)

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” (Revelation 12:9)

Supernatural Powers:

Corvo’s supernatural abilities such as Possession, Windblast, etc. can be compared to the “power and signs and lying wonders” performed by the antichrist or “son of perdition” in 2 Thessalonians 2:

Dishonored Mission 4 Windblast from Dishonored Wiki

And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” (2 Thessalonians 2:8-12)

God of War and the Bible Part 1: Ascension

*Note: there is an audio version of this article:

God of War has been a hit ever since the first game released in 2005. However, this series has WAY more biblical problems than just Greek gods and goddesses.

Go to Isaiah 14:12-14:

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Here, we see clearly that Lucifer wanted to ascend. Isn’t it interesting that the new God of War game is called Ascension? This emphasis on the act of ascending was present in the God of War series from its first installment, where Kratos manages to become a “god” at the end.

An especially disturbing element that is seen in the God of War series is the replacement of Jesus with Kratos, seen in 2 Corinthians 11:3-4:

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

The tagline of God of War: Ascension is “Before He Was a God, He Was a Man.” This definitely appears to be another Jesus. The following is one of the many places in the bible where the deity AND humanity of Jesus Christ is revealed:

“Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:6-11)

Now, let’s see the verses where Jesus talks about his ascending into heaven after he is raised from the dead.

What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?” (John 6:62)

Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” (John 20:17)

And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.” (John 3:13)

Just like Jesus ascended up into heaven, Kratos ascends into Mount Olympus and becomes a god himself. This is clearly another gospel and another Jesus. However, he is not the God of the Bible, instead he is the being described in Revelation 17:8:

The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

In Revelation 19:19-21, we see what is the ultimate fate of both the beast, and those who follow him:

And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse [Jesus], and against his army.

And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

I leave you with this final verse, 2 Corinthians 6:16-18:

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Minecraft and the Bible Part 1: Going to Hell

*Note: there is an audio version of this article:

Minecraft can be seen throughout the Bible in more ways than you may think. Let’s start with the Nether…

There are several verses in the Bible that actually use the word Nether, of which I’ve picked two-Ezekiel 32:18, and Ezekiel 32:24:

Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit.” (Ezekiel 32:18)

There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.”         (Ezekiel 32:24)

Taken together, these verses link the Nether to “the pit”- Hell.  Another way you can tell that the Nether is synonymous with Hell is because you hear wailing and gnashing of teeth in the Nether, as described in Matthew 13:50 when speaking about Hell.

It can’t be a mere coincidence that in Psalm 139:8 It says: “If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.” AND it just so happens that players are unable to make a bed in the Nether. As of this writing, any attempt to create a bed in the Nether ends in a virtual explosion!

The Bible is the answer to everything. It even shows the way to Hell in Matthew 7:13:

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

This verse and the Nether verses are connected, and the tying link is in Jeremiah 17:1:

The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the table of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars;

Here we see how the Bible reveals exactly how Minecraft goes against the word of God and is leading millions of devoted players into a trap:

Players take a “point of diamond” (a diamond pickaxe), and use it to create a wide gate, that leads directly to destruction, the “nether parts of the earth.” Then, the game rewards you for it.

In 2 Corinthians 13:1 it says “This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” We have just been shown several. Today, God gives you a choice:

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

Today is the day of salvation, choose life-choose the Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Elder Scrolls and the Bible Part 1: Dragon Shouts

Elder Scrolls Intro*Note: there is an audio version of this article:

The Bible talks about Skyrim to an extensive degree. Turn to Revelation 12:9:

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Here you see Satan clearly associated with dragons. Incidentally, Skyrim’s plot, gameplay, and overall feel revolve around dragons as well. Some examples include:

  • Your character is called the Dragonborn, having the soul and blood of a dragon and the body of a human/humanoid.
  • The cover has an image of a dragon and the collectors edition had a giant dragon statue as well.
  • The game has its own language and alphabet for Dragons, mysteriously created when a designer for the game went and brewed mead for a weekend.

Now, turn to Revelation 12:16:

And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

Notice the word “cast” in this verse, much like casting a spell. The Dragon Shouts (Thu’um) in Skyrim have you speak certain words of power for things to happen in the game world (with the addition of Kinect support you can say these words in real life as well). There is a shout called Frost Breath that covers your enemies with ice.

Frost Breath Dragon Shout

Since ice is water, That means users of the game are not only being identified with (and playing the part of) the devil himself, but also doing the work of the flesh described in Galatians 5:20 as “emulations.”

Furthermore, the dragon language used in-game relates the player to the false prophet of Revelation:

And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.” (Revelation 13:11)

The false prophet’s fate:

And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.” (Revelation 19:20)
