Halo and the Bible Part 3: The Forerunners & Master Chief

Halo Intro*Note: there is an audio version of this article:

*Note: It is important to read Halo and the Bible Part 2: The Covenant before continuing.

In the Halo series, the Covenant worship beings known as “Forerunners:”

Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.” (Hebrews 6:20)

Here we see Jesus Christ is Forerunner. Christians worship Christ, further solidifying the link between the Covenant and Christians:

And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.” (Matthew 28:9)

In Halo, humans become the new Forerunners. They are shown as inheriting “the Mantle” passed down from the nearly extinct Forerunner race.

Tempting humans with the prospect of becoming gods is the same tactic used by Satan in Genesis Chapter 3:

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5)

343 Guilty Spark told Master Chief this near the end of Halo 3:

“You are the child of my makers. Inheritor of all they left behind. You are Forerunner!”

So here we see Master Chief is being made Forerunner-which is what Jesus is. 2 Corinthians calls this “another Jesus.

Master Chief represents Lucifer, who wants to become like God. Master Chief is doing this by assuming the title of Forerunner (replacing Jesus Christ):

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.” (Isaiah 14:14)

Master Chief even said:

Maybe I am a demon.

Finally, despite Satan’s desires, his future is described right after the verse above:

Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” (Isaiah 14:15)
