Final Fantasy VII is the best-selling and most popular game in the Final Fantasy series. Sephiroth (pictured above) appeared first in Final Fantasy VII as the main antagonist, and has been recognized as one of the “best” villains in gaming.

Let’s shine the light of the Bible on this subject.

Safer∙Sephiroth’s form has six wings:

“Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” (Isaiah 6:2-3)

Instead of praising God as does this scriptural parallel, Sephiroth blasphemes him (as you will see later).

Let’s look at some of Sephiroth’s abilities:

The Meteor spell he uses in FF VII that nearly destroys the Planet:

“And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.” (Revelation 20:9)

“Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;” (Genesis 19:24)

“And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.” (2 Kings 1:12)

Sephiroth caused Geostigma, a disease which afflicts it’s victims with sores:

[pouring out God’s wrath] “And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.” (Revelation 16:10-11)

Fire3, a massive fire spell:

“And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.” (Leviticus 10:2)

“Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.” (Ezekiel 22:31)

“Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.” (Psalm 50:3)

Ice3 is a powerful ice spell:

“He [God] casteth forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold?” (Psalm 147:17)

“He [God] destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.” (Psalm 78:47)

“I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.” (Haggai 2:17)

Bolt3 is a lightning spell::

[Talking to God]“Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.” (Psalm 144:6)

[God speaking] “Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?” (Job 38:35)

“The Lord also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire. Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.” (Psalm 18:13-14)

Quake3 creates an earthquake:

“For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;” (Haggai 2:6)

“And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.” (Isaiah 2:19)

“The voice of the Lord shaketh the wilderness; the Lord shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.” (Psalm 29:8)

“The mountains quake at him [God], and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.

Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.” (Nahum 1:5-6)

Sephiroth’s Supernova attack is also his most famous one. It destroys planets, detonates the sun, and eventually burns the earth.

“Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” (2 Peter 3:11-12)

Sephiroth is known as Jenova’s “son:”

“Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:” (Isaiah 26:4)

“That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.” (Psalm 83:18)

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;” (Mark 1:1)

“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” (John 3:18)

We can clearly see that Sephiroth is just as the title of this article suggests, “another Jesus.” However, Sephiroth is not simply another Jesus, but something far worse:

In Ezekiel 28:13 the Bible says one of Satan’s coverings was beryl:

“Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.”

In the verse right after it calls Satan “the anointed cherub that covereth:”

“Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.” (Ezekiel 28:14)

Cherubs have wings, as seen in many verses including this:

“Then did the cherubims [cherubims is the plural form of cherub] lift up their wings, and the wheels beside them; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.” (Ezekiel 11:22)

They call Sephiroth the “One-Winged Angel:”

The verse also said that the Devil “hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.” An infamous picture of Sephiroth during the Nibelheim Incident:

So far, Sephiroth has perfectly matched several characteristics of the Devil. A quote from Sephiroth:

• “I’ll rob you of your light forever.”

“Thy [God] word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

“Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.” (Luke 8:12)

“And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.” (Mark 4:15)

Isaiah 14 speaks of Satan (formerly known as Lucifer):

[Lucifer speaking]”I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” (Isaiah 14:14-15)

It says that Satan will “be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” This happened in Final Fantasy, as in Dissidia 012 Sephiroth said “I’ve already seen hell.” He also said “Into the depths of darkness:”

“And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 25:30)

“Outer darkness” is another name in the Bible for Hell.

Sephiroth also says “I shall crush your prayers.”

The words of Yoshinori Kitase (Director of Final Fantasy VII and producer of modern Final Fantasy titles such as Final Fantasy XIII-2) regarding Sephiroth: “Sephiroth’s existence and will is extremely powerful. There is nothing stronger, nothing above him.”

“Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:” (Ephesians 1:20-21)

“My Father [God] , which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” (John 10:29)

This, along with all the other ways he imitates and replaces God (detailed above in the section about him being another Jesus) lines up with what Satan said in Isaiah 14-“I will be like the most High.”

After examining some of the evidence, we see that Sephiroth is both another Jesus, and the Devil.

Finally, the plot of Final Fantasy VII revolves around Sephiroth wanting to absorb the energy of the Lifestream:

“And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.” (Revelation 22:1)

“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17)

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21)

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:37)
