In April of 2013, Injustice: Gods Among Us will be released. It will feature several of DC’s superheroes and villains, along with iconic locations from the DC universe:

This is not the first time superhumans have been looked upon and called gods. The tradition extends back to at least 1971, when Jack Kirby created a series for DC Comics called New Gods.

“They provoked him [God] to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.” (Deuteronomy 32:16-18)

A few superhero characteristics and abilities:

Green Lantern’s outfit:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:” (Psalm 104:1-2)

Superman’s heat vision:

[speaking of Jesus] “His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;” (Revelation 1:14)

Thor is the Norse god of thunder and can command lightning at will:

[Talking to God]“Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.” (Psalm 144:6)

[God speaking] “Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?” (Job 38:35)

The iconic image of Superman looking down on Earth from space:

“The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.” (Psalm 14:2)

The Thing is a living rock:

“For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God?” (Psalm 18:31)

“Because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.” (Deuteronomy 32:3-4)

Wonder Woman is the goddess Diana, who has actually been worshiped since biblical times:

Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.” (Acts 19:24-27)

“And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?” (Acts 19:35)

Before 2011’s “New 52” relaunch, it was said that Wonder Woman received her strength from the blessing of the goddess Demeter. The quote:

“I, Demeter grant her the power and strength like that of the Earth itself!”

“In his [God’s] hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.” (Psalm 95:4)

The Incredible Hulk at one point hit the Earth so hard that the Rocky Mountains were shaken to their foundations. Read the comic page and verses below:

“Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he [God] was wroth.” (Psalm 18:7)

“The mountains quake at him [God], and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.

Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.” (Nahum 1:5-6)

Justice League headquarters (the Watchtower) is located in orbit above the Earth:

“Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth.” (Psalm 57:11)

Both Mister Immortal and Resurrection Man are immortal:

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:” (John 11:25)

[Speaking of Jesus] “Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” (1 Timothy 6:16)

“Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:17)

“Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:” (2 Timothy 1:8-10)

In 2003, a three-issue comic series was released called Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman: Trinity:

The biblical Trinity:

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” (1 John 5:7)

The Human Torch controls and uses fire:

“And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.” (Leviticus 10:2)

“Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.” (Ezekiel 22:31)

“For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.” (Isaiah 66:15)

Aquaman known as the “The King of the Seven Seas.” DC Comics’ official bio for him also states “Aquaman is the king of all things aqua:”

“The sea is his [God], and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.” (Psalm 95:5)

“O Lord God of hosts, who is a strong Lord like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.” (Psalm 89:8-9)

The Iron Man suit has frequently been modified to give the user invisibility:

“Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:17)

“Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.” (Isaiah 45:15)

“Lo, he [God] goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.” (Job 9:11)

“Behold, I go forward, but he [God] is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:” (Job 23:8-9)

Consider this:

“But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.” (Jeremiah 2:28)
